Arsenal’s upcoming registration situation

There’s a lot of uncertainty when it comes to the Arsenal squad this summer, including several home grown players, however, the registration quota should be easily reached.

Firstly, the regulation itself: Each Premier League team have to submit a list of no more than 25 players, in which at least eight of whom must be home grown players. A home grown player is someone who has spent 36 months or more at a club affiliated to the FA prior to his 21st birthday. Players under the age of 21 can be used without being included on this list.

Arsenal had no problem abiding to this rule last season. And even with the current uncertainty of several home grown players such as Szczesny, Jenkinson, Gibbs, Ox, Wilshere and Walcott, it won’t be a problem this upcoming season either.

If we exclude all these players from the discussion, Arsenal would still have eight home grown players out of the required eight to rely on from the first team. Meaning, they’d just have to add one player from the reserves to satisfy the regulation.

With all the loanees now having returned to Arsenal as well, the amount of first team players is quite excessive. The first team squad is 31 players strong. However, as far as compiling our first team into what might seem like a tight 25- man squad, once again, there shouldn’t be an issue, because of Arsenal’s superfluous second- string players.

With the probable departure of Ospina, Jenkinson, Debuchy, Gibbs, Campbell and Lucas, and the potential exit of Szczesny, Ox, Wilshere, and Walcott, the quota will still be met.

I doubt all ten will leave Arsenal this summer, however, most of them will. The real unpredictability lies with Szczesny, Ox, Wilshere and perhaps Walcott.

Here’s what Arsenal’s 25- man squad looks like without the uncertain players (everyone mentioned above):

(HG= Home Grown)

Martinez – HG

Bellerin – HG

Holding – HG
Chambers – HG

Ramsey – HG
Coquelin – HG

Welbeck – HG
Iwobi – HG

This adds up to, as mentioned, eight home grown players included in a slim 19- man squad. So it’s evident that there’s room to manoeuvre in with departing and arriving players this summer, even if we keep or lose more players than suggested here. Worst case scenario, we’d have to sacrifice a spot in the 25- man list for an academy player.

Next I will comment on the state of our centre back position, and if Chambers should be kept at the club or loaned out again.
